Mushroom Log Cultivation Workshop

Learn how to grow your own mushrooms in this hands-on workshop! We’ll guide you through the process of inoculating hardwood logs with mushroom spawn and teach you everything you need to know about setting up and caring for your log at home. By the end of the day, you’ll have your own prepared log to take home and the skills to grow fresh mushrooms year after year.

Dates: Saturday, January 25, 2025 or Saturday, February 8, 2025 (rollover or in case of weather)

Schedule

  • 10:00 AM – Arrival & Orientation
    Gather at the Tyee Arts & Education Center, meet your instructors, and get an overview of the day.

  • 10:15 AM – The Science of Fungi
    Learn the basics of mushroom biology, the types of mushrooms suited for log cultivation, and how to select the right log.

  • 10:45 AM – Tools & Techniques
    Watch a step-by-step demonstration of how to inoculate logs using the right tools and methods.

  • 11:30 AM – Log Inoculation: Guided Practice
    Work hands-on to inoculate your own hardwood log, with support from your instructors.

  • 12:45 PM – Log Care & Harvesting Tips
    Learn how to care for your log to ensure successful mushroom growth, including placement, watering, and harvesting.

  • 1:15 PM – Reflection & Q&A
    Wrap up the workshop with time for questions and connecting with other participants.

  • 2:00 PM – Workshop Concludes
    Take your inoculated log home and start your mushroom-growing journey!

What to Bring

  • Lunch and Drinks: Please bring your own lunch and any beverages you’d like for the day.

  • Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Dress for the season and plan to spend time outdoors or in a covered space. Layers and sturdy shoes are recommended.

  • Notebook (Optional): Bring a notebook and pen if you’d like to take notes.

  • All Materials: Hardwood logs, mushroom spawn, and all tools required for log inoculation.

  • Expert Instruction: Step-by-step guidance from knowledgeable instructors.

  • Your Take-Home Log: A fully inoculated log, ready to grow mushrooms at home.

Meet Your Guides

Matt Hale is a mycologist and naturalist from the Skykomish Valley of Washington State. His lifelong passion for wilderness, plants, and fungi led him to studying at Alderleaf Wilderness College where he graduated in 2015 with Permaculture Design and CyberTracker Level II certificates. Over the last 10 years, in addition to teaching wilderness skills to youth and guiding wilderness therapy trips, Matt owned and operated a farm and forage business in Sedro-Woolley.

Ansley Roberts is an Appalachian-born, desert-grown kid with more tree sap running through her veins than blood. She apprenticed with Ariella Daly of Honey Bee Wild in beekeeping, dreamwork, and goddess study as well as in wilderness ceremonial leadership with Cascadia Quest. As a trained herbalist, wilderness rites of passage guide, and dreamtender, Ansley has the great honor and joy of leading others to their belonging on this earth and to the stories in their bones.
