It should be noted that although anyone of any age can learn these skills through hands on practice within our teaching style, this is not specifically a youth program. Regardless, this would be a really fun way to spend Father’s Day weekend!

In this comprehensive workshop, you'll learn essential skills for thriving in the wild, using predominantly primitive techniques that have been passed down through generations. Our experienced instructors will guide you through every step of the process, ensuring that you feel confident and empowered in your ability to survive and thrive in the great outdoors.
Throughout the day, you'll delve into the fundamental pillars of wilderness survival: fire, shelter, and water. Discover the ancient art of fire-making, mastering techniques that harness the natural elements to ignite flames without the need for modern tools. From friction fire to flint and steel, you'll explore a variety of methods for creating and maintaining fire in diverse environments.
Next, you'll learn the art of crafting shelter using materials found in the wilderness. Whether it's building a sturdy debris hut or constructing a lean-to shelter, you'll gain practical insights into creating safe and comfortable havens to protect against the elements.
But survival isn't just about fire and shelter—it's also about securing a clean and reliable source of water. In our workshop, you'll uncover the secrets of wilderness water procurement, from identifying safe sources to purifying and filtering water for consumption.
As you immerse yourself in these ancient skills, you'll also deepen your connection to the natural world around you. Through hands-on practice and experiential learning, you'll develop a profound appreciation for the rhythms of nature and your place within it.
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
10:00 am - 10:30 am: Orientation and Introduction
Begin your adventure with a warm welcome and orientation to the workshop. Meet your instructors and fellow participants as we set the stage for a day of learning and exploration.
10:30 am - 12:00 pm: Fire-Making Skills
Dive into the ancient art of fire-making using primitive techniques. Learn how to ignite flames using friction fire methods, flint and steel, and other traditional techniques. Practice building and maintaining fires in different environments and conditions.
12:00 pm - 12:30 pm: Lunch Break
Take time to relax, connect with fellow participants, and refuel for the afternoon sessions.
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm: Shelter Building
Explore the fundamentals of shelter construction using natural materials found in the wilderness. Learn how to build a variety of shelters, including debris huts, lean-tos, and more.Discover techniques for creating sturdy and weather-resistant shelters to protect against the elements.
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm: Water Procurement and Purification
Delve into the art of finding, collecting, and purifying water in the wilderness. Learn how to identify safe water sources and implement effective purification methods. Gain practical skills for ensuring a clean and reliable water supply in survival situations.
3:30 pm - 4:00 pm: Recap and Closing
Reflect on the day's lessons and experiences with your instructors and fellow participants. Celebrate your newfound knowledge and skills as we wrap up the workshop with a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.

Get to know your guide
Matt Hale
Matt Hale grew up exploring the mountains and forests of Washington’s Sky Valley. Since childhood, he dedicated his time to deeply knowing and understanding the flora, fauna, and fungi of the Pacific Northwest. He graduated from Alderleaf Wilderness College in 2015 where he earned a Permaculture Design Certificate in association with the Bullocks Permaculture Center, as well as a Cybertracker Track & Sign Level II certification. Matt is a talented outdoor educator with a passion for human psychology, wilderness emergency medicine, natural building, and sustainable farming. When he’s not foraging for wild edibles or identifying mushrooms in the forest, you can find Matt dropping into half pipes on his skateboard, or crafting in the wood shop.

To ensure a personalized experience, space is limited. Early registration is recommended to secure your spot. Participants are advised to dress comfortably and wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear. Please bring a notebook and pen to jot down valuable insights and tips shared during the workshop.
